The Andrej Marušič Institute (UP IAM) is the only research institute operating within the University of Primorska. Since its establishment, it has carried out both national and international research projects. Its core projects, it has also implemented applied projects, which represent a strong link with the economy and other stakeholders, the users of research results. Research activities are closely integrated with the UP Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies (UP FAMNIT), enabling a strong connection between research, education, and knowledge transfer.
Research and development activities are focused on four main areas:
Mathematics
The research group is among the leading research groups in the field of Algebraic Graph Theory worldwide, and actively contributes to the advancement of mathematical science on a global scale. Its researchers co-organized Slovenia’s largest mathematical event, the 8th European Congress of Mathematics (8ECM).
Information Science and Technologies
Research focuses on the development of digital solutions, smart systems, and artificial intelligence. It includes sensor technologies, language technologies, and applied projects for smart environments, sustainability, public infrastructure, and interdisciplinary research.
Wood Technology and Renewable Materials
Research is dedicated to the development of renewable materials, with a particular focus on innovative methods of wood modification. Through the REED design approach, the research group combines natural materials, ergonomics, and sustainability principles to promote health and improve quality of life.
Suicidology and Public Health
The research group focuses on mental health, public health, suicide research, and suicide prevention, providing evidence-based support to society. Its researchers co-organized Slovenia’s leading event in suicidology, the 32nd IASP World Congress.
